What is a CIO or a CTO and what is the difference between them?

The CIO is in charge of all the information technology (IT) in use by the company. He or she should be in charge of all business systems required by the business, the operation and maintenance of all technology operated by the company, as well as the management of all employees and vendors building and delivering IT.

The CTO on the other hand is in charge of the intellectual property (IP) technology that a company creates. This includes software and hardware engineering, the research and development associated with building technology as well as overseeing all of the engineering staff and those that support the staff. What is a CIO and Why Does a Business Need One?

A CIO is the Chief Information Officer of a company.  The “I” for Information is the same “I” for Information in Information Technology (IT).  The CIO is responsible for everything IT related.  Also, the CIO is part of the executive team and is responsible for helping to define the strategy of the company and then implementing and operating all of the technology aspects required to deliver on the strategy.

The CIO needs to be able to switch seamlessly across three different concerns of the business – the current technical issues, operational functions and the strategic roadmap.  Forrester Research describes these roles as being a soldier, a captain and a general all at the same time.
